The Project targeted first to third form students of all secondary and junior secondary schools in Dominica. It aimed to sensitize youth on the issue of domestic violence and its devastating impact on society, and other related gender issues. It also sought to change the mind-set of youth in society towards positive change in their behaviours as regards the opposite sex. The ultimate goal of the Bureau’s continuous gender sensitization programme is the harmonious coexistence of both sexes so that they can equally contribute to the Development of our Dominican Society.
Students and teachers involved in this project were made aware of:
- The situation as regards the extent/incidence of domestic violence and violence against women and girls in Dominica
- The impact on the individual family and society
- Their rights to a life free of violence and respect for basic rights of the individual
- Misconceptions about male and females roles
- Their own attitudes, which indicate a cultural acceptance of domestic violence,
- Risk factors for violence
- Alternative non-violent actions which can be taken
- Available services and provisions in the law
